In the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion providers in Phoenix and all over Arizona have closed their doors as a precaution, to avoid violating laws that may make it a criminal offense for a doctor to provide an abortion. As a result, many women are hastily booking travel arrangements to other states that may allow this procedure.

But before you go, it’s super important to slow down, and take a moment to regroup. There are a few things that you need to do prior to booking your travel to go get an abortion.

3 Things to Do Before Planning Your Abortion Travel

  1. Verify your pregnancy with a free pregnancy test.

At Choices, we offer no-cost pregnancy tests. While you may have taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test from a drug store, we can give you a medical-grade test that is more accurate and more sensitive, determining the presence of the “pregnancy hormone” within about a week of conception. You’ll definitely need to confirm your pregnancy before you can schedule an abortion procedure.

  1. Get an ultrasound.

We also offer no-cost ultrasound tests. A limited obstetric ultrasound is a non-negotiable if you’re considering abortion.  This test can determine a lot of things. First, an ultrasound gives a doctor a much clearer idea of the gestational age of the baby. Since many states have gestational limitations on abortion, you’ll need to know how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Second, the ultrasound can determine where the pregnancy actually is.  Nearly 2% of pregnancies are ectopic – meaning the pregnancy isn’t actually in the uterus, but rather in the fallopian tubes. These ectopic, or “tubal” pregnancies either resolve themselves through natural miscarraige, or they can rupture in the woman’s fallopian tube, causing severe damage and risk of death.

Determining the location of the pregnancy tells if it’s viable, or if the woman needs further medical attention.

  1. Get More Information.

If your pregnancy is confirmed and the pregnancy is viable, are you aware of all your options outside of abortion? Women deserve to know their options, and tehy deserve to know medical rights when it comes to abortion.  No doctor should deny you an ultrasound, and when you are fully informed of your options, then you can make a qualified decision about what is best for you.
